Luke 5:30-31 "SEEK FIRST"
"Seek First" is a platform inspired from Matthew 6:33 where we are encouraged to Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, live righteously, and everything we need will be given to us.
Our objective is to show you the practicality of this verse and hopefully inspire you to seek Him first daily. We use the S.O.A.P model as a study guide to help fulfill this mandate. We pick different scriptures and try to figure out how we can apply them to our daily lives, how they relate to the Kingdom of God and how we can live righteously through them. (S)cripture: Luke 5:30-31 (NLT) "But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus' disciples, Why do you eat and drink with such scum?" Jesus answered them 'Healthy people don't need a doctor - sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent"
(O)bservation: A bit of background into this verse...Jesus had just made Levi (Matthew) who was a tax collector His disciple, Matthew then organised a party for Jesus at his house. Isn't it funny how Jesus came to earth and picked His disciples from businesses and not church??? (anyway, that's a story for another day)
Jesus' response to the Pharisees revealed a deep truth that they were yet to discover. Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned, we all fall short of Gods glorious standard"
In other words, Jesus was indirectly telling them everyone was sick but the Pharisees thought they were healthy because they were disciplined with their religious rituals.
Jesus then said "...I have come to call not those who THINK they are righteous...", but those who KNOW they are sinners. How many times have we heard stories of people who thought they were healthy and all of a sudden got a cancer diagnosis or simply dropped dead...the fact you think you are healthy doesn't make you healthy. The fact you THINK you are good, doesn't make it TRUE
The first step in true repentance is KNOWING you are a sinner, this is why the law was given. The 10 commandments wasn't given to help us become perfect before God, it was given to help us understand how imperfect we were...how desperately we needed a saviour to help us deal with its impossible requirements.
Remember, the terms of the law required we keep ALL the laws, not just some or most, but ALL. It was an impossible task only Jesus could remedy, but the first step is to fully come to terms with the fact you have been found guilty of breaking the law and only Jesus can release you from its conditions.
Think about it, if you commit murder just once but you are a philanthropist and give to millions of people everyday...what do you think the court would do? (Exactly)
Your good deeds mean nothing because you've already been found guilty of sin
(A)pplication: Romans 10:4 says "...all who Believe in Jesus are made right with God"
The next step for you now is to get to know who Jesus is and what He has done for everyone...He came down to earth, lived a perfect life on our behalf in order to satisfy the conditions of the law, He was then killed unjustly for all our crimes...so that you and i can have a relationship with God again
One practical exercise you can do is to start reading the 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), they chronicle the life of Jesus from different perspectives. Faith comes by hearing the Good News about Jesus Christ.
You can also go on youtube and search for the Good News. I found these really exciting videos on youtube called "The Bible Project", they make short illustrative videos on books of the Bible, if you want to get the summary of the Gospels before reading them, i would recommend them. Check out their illustration on the Gospel according to Mark below;
(P)rayer: Father, i thank You for making me aware of my sick state even when i didn't think anything was wrong. Just like when i have a headache and i take paracetamol, You have already given us a solution to our biggest headache in Your Son Jesus Christ...my life is a testimony of what His pill can do. I just especially pray for anyone reading this today who isn't aware of their sinful state, they may do good things but we all know you require perfection, not just good...convict them of their imperfection and help them receive Jesus into their hearts so they can be made right with You. Thank You Father!!!
